Suspension Noise Over Bumps: Shocks, Bushings, or Ball Joints?
Suspension noise has a clear, logical order to check through.
The symptom
A knocking or clunking sound over speed bumps or potholes.
What's causing it
Worn shock absorbers are the most common cause, followed by worn bushings or ball joints.
What to do
Try the bounce test: push down on the car and let go — excessive bounce means weak shocks. Always replace shocks in pairs, never just one side.
