Brake Squealing vs. Grinding: Why the Difference Matters

These two sounds are often lumped together, but they mean very different things for your safety.

The symptom

A squeal or grinding sound when braking.

What's causing it

Squealing is usually the pad-wear indicator doing exactly its job. Grinding means the pads are fully worn and the disc itself is being damaged.

What to do

Squealing: get the pads inspected soon. Grinding: this is safety-critical — don't delay, continuing can damage the disc and compromise braking.
